Day 10: How God uses associations and comparisons

Since the beginning of this series I have been nervous as to whether in sharing some of these things, I am not taking away their sacredness. In my limited experience, I have observed that once people perceive how simple it is to hear God, they make it simplistic. And they tend to lose touch with the sacredness of hearing from God. May this not be you! Hearing from God is a privilege He has availed to His children. We must approach His word and His presence with reverence. I am yet to learn how to share things related to hearing from God without feeling this way. So please pray for me. Now that I have that out of the way, let us continue from Day 9 where God revealed how our December will look like.

God is able to reveal things to us and in this article I want us to look into a few more ways in which God reveals. And since it is a Friday, I will not be too long. To start with, we know that in 1 Corinthians 2:10 Paul tells us that God reveals things to us. And later on in 1 Corinthians 2:13, he explains how God does this. In the New Heart English Bible, it reads this way “And we speak of these things, not with words taught by human wisdom, but with those taught by the Spirit, comparing spiritual things with spiritual things.” So from this, we gain an understanding that God can reveal things to us through comparison.

God teaches us through comparison and will often take something we are familiar with and compare it to something that is unfamiliar in order to make us understand what He is trying to say to us. I have heard some students of prophecy call this parabolic language. That is, God using parables to move us from the familiar to the unfamiliar. It is the power of dreams, prophetic riddles, and their interpretation. The power of the parabolic language is in its association. You see something in a symbolic way that you will associate with something that is relatable to you. The outcome of this being a prophetic revelation of a sort.

In University, I used to be part of a prayer group. It was a group of young men praying almost every night, and soon enough we began also sharing the word, imparting certain anointings over each other and prophesying. One night as I was sharing the mind of God with a visitor to the group. The Lord began talking about the side of this brother’s family. And I could see from his facial expression that the information did not make sense without knowing which side of the family I was referring to. The mother’s side of the family or the father’s side. At this point, I depended on God to reveal this information to me. My heart desperately yearned for this brother to understand this word. There was a set of keys on the table and the keyholder was pink. When my eyes were suddenly drawn to the pink keyholder, I knew it was the maternal side of his family. And when I said it, everything I was sharing with him began to fall into place and make perfect sense to him. That is the power of association and comparison that 1 Corinthians 2:13 alludes to!

In my daily life, I pay close attention to every clue that God gives to me because I know that He compares one thing with another. You also need to pay close attention to what God is revealing to you! Related to the prophetic, is the gift of word of knowledge. Whist still in university God began showing me people’s names, names of places, what their sickness was and where the pain was located on their body, etc. even more accurately. All of these come through associations and they may play themselves out in different ways.

Most of the time, if someone has a biblical name it is easier for me to know that detail by the spirit of God because I will suddenly get a Psalm of David for e.g. and I will know that I am talking to David. Or I will see a Stethoscope and I will know that they are either a Doctor, in Medicine somehow, or their name is Luke. There are ways in which you grow in your reliance on the Holy Spirit to be able to lean entirely on Him and share such details with others. I do not press for God to speak to me regarding an area of a person’s life, if I cannot hear anything from Him in that area. For example, If I do not get a person’s name, I move along to other areas of their life that the Lord might want to speak about, like finances, academics, ministry or marriage. Word of knowledge is NOT prophecy. I will share instances where there are exceptions, when we study gifts in depth.

Some do not believe these things are possible at all. The best way to see is to apply this information I am giving you, walk in love, and study the word of God. The bible says “Taste and see that the LORD is good” Psalm 34:8a. You have to be a word scientist! Study the word, draw hypothesis, practice it, observe and ensure it is repeatable! I can guarantee you though… Over and over again, you will see that God is faithful!

I will go deeper into Word of knowledge when we talk about the gifts of the Holy Spirit much later on in the series! I promised to be brief today, so let this be your take away… your prophetic revelation is going to come through association and comparison! I cannot stress the importance of reading and listening to the word of God enough if you want to hear Him accurately! Love and Light to you! Shalom.
